Tellus Survey back for 2018

Tellus Survey back for 2018

Back for the seventh year, the Tellus aerial survey will take over Co. Limerick, north Tipperary and west Cork (see maps below) from May to Autumn weather permitting. The survey will be conducted by a low flying deHavilland DHC-6 Twin Otter flying at approximately 250ft over rural areas and 800ft over built up areas. The main publicity campaign is aimed at farmers and animal owners, however general aviation pilots operating in these areas should be alert for low flying aircraft. This is particularly important when operating from farm airstrips or other airstrips not marked on maps. Check for NOTAMs and also the www.tellus.ie website for up to date areas of operation.

Low flying Survey Aircraft over Waterford

Tellus Aircraft ImageThe latest phase of the survey involves a Twin Otter aircraft flying at a low height over eastern Waterford, parts of southern Tipperary, Kilkenny and western Wexford and will be in the air from mid-April 2016 for 3-4 weeks (weather permitting). The Tellus website – www.tellus.ie – is updated weekly with the planned flight schedule.

The aircraft will fly at a low level, around 200ft, over rural areas, rising to 800ft over urban areas. While in most cases this aircraft will be operating beneath our normal operating altitudes, a good look out will be required during approach and landing, especially if you are operating in and out of unmarked strips.

The Tellus team is delivering an ongoing communications campaign in the region. If you have any concerns about the survey you can contact the Tellus Freephone information line on 1800 303 516 or visit www.tellus.ie. You can also follow Tellus on twitter, @TellusGSI
